Paper: Canson Infinity Rag Photographique

Construct is a series of detailed aerial landscape photography above the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia industrial environment. As I looked down from above, I began to focus on the repetition, patterns, form, structure and organisation of different industries. From the air, there is always something to see, learn and understand. I’ve always been interested in what creates employment opportunities, particularly in the building, shipping and automotive industries. With atomisation technologies becoming more prevalent in certain areas of logistic based operations, I wanted to take an elevated screenshot of what our landscape looks before it begins to change once again. I was interested in the space that big business & corporations occupy and how they use it for their and our own perpetual good, or evil? Through this series I want the viewer to reconnect with the demand on our planet and the human effort behind our every desire.

Activity – If products are now on the course to being completely autotomized, what jobs will be on offer in the future? Will there be any employment, and who looks after the machines when they don’t need looking after any more? These questions are always what come to mind first, especially when you see large-scale, clear & simple systems before your eyes. Technologies such as facial / objective recognition are becoming so much more common as do the cameras and the censors they’re used with also develop in allowing organic process be fulfilled by machines of all kinds, especially when they’re driverless, awaiting a series of instructions.

There is still requirement for people to be at their desks, fulfilling day-to-day tasks that can become mundane, and repetitive. If there wasn’t anything to do if you didn’t have a job, just the same if you weren’t required because that line of work doesn’t exists anymore.

Technology get's better and becomes harder to read between the lines, as the lines become more and more defined. What are people going to do when jobs become autonomous? When they can't get work, what options do these skilled workers have? It’s important to begin the discussion sooner rather than later. Maybe unemployment will enable people to become more involved in their own creativity; family lives and a better, more stable life.
